Mark Jessen with RockToRubberGood day, my name is Mark Jessen.
I am a cofounder of the Austin Pond Society, and my company is known as The Fish Tender. I have been building, repairing, maintaining and advising on the outdoor ponds and water gardens in the Austin, Texas area for over 25 years.

With the increased use of rubber liners in the construction of outdoor ponds comes the problem of securing the coping stones to the rubber.

Why? (Because concrete does not bond to rubber, like it bonds to rock). Rubber is too smooth. Concrete needs something to grab on to.)

The Solution: RockToRubber™ helps bond these incompatible materials.

"This revolutionary new product can be used in repairs, cosmetic applications and construction of rubber lined ponds. For light-weight construction purposes, RockToRubber™ can be used to construct entire ponds or just provide a safe rock to exit your pond.

There are 2 units securing this 50 plus pound demonstration rock to a piece of rubber liner - as seen at the April 2006 meeting of the Austin Pond Society.

*Not one APS Member at the meeting could pull the rock from the rubber!

Example of typical dry-stacked pond

According to the industry the average size pond in the United States is 1,000 gallons or less, due to space availability. In most cases these ponds are built using EPDM rubber. They are two feet deep or less. The pumps in most cases are in the pond. And most use the method of dry stacking the coping to give a natural look.Example: The small pond in above photo.

Sun, rain, cold, pets, kids and ground shifting are just a few examples that can cause the drying stacking to become looser than its original design.

The owner of this pond has to get in the pond or lean over loose coping stones just to service their pump. This can be unsafe for the customer as well for the pond itself, because I believe a loose stone around any pond is an accident looking for a place to happen. Don’t let it happen to you. If your pond has any of the above conditions, then RockToRubber can help.

2nd year: Landscaping still underway but the pond is still perfect!

This simple product, RockToRubber™, allows for securing rocks and stones to clean dry rubber liners and many other substrates with the use of concrete or other solidifying materials with adhering capabilities.

Application Instructions and Tips

We recommend you take the time to understand proper placement of units, to cover the size rocks you decide upon.

Some examples:

Best results when rubber liner temperature is 60 degrees Fahrenheit and higher.

When you and your pond are ready:

After removing the paper backing the unit can be fixed to the clean and dry rubber liner by pressing down and smoothing out the rubber pad. This is similar to patching a hole in your liner.

Work the concrete into the mesh and completely cover the unit. Seat and tamp your rock into the concrete.

This 1500 pound rock was chosen to be a focal point in the waterfall, but had some wobble in its intended position.
Seven units secured and stabilized the massive piece.

Too much liner was exposed when the pond was filled. ( A problem many pond owners have ).  The pond is being drained.
There’s a solution !!

With extra padding on the pond bottom to prevent punctures,
wood braces the stones applied to RockToRubber™ until the concrete sets.

The cosmetic application went smoothly and rapidly. Note the skimmer box on the right as it will be transformed.
